Vintage Williamson — manic presentation combined with very good routine construction and great sleight-of-hand. I find it somewhat frustrating that I’ll never be able to get my non-magician friends to appreciate what a great technician he is, because all too often what you get with him on Youtube is a man going from zero to bonkers so fast you can’t even properly gauge how fooled you are.
Still, it’s a really nice routine. It’s got the advantage of being simpler than a three cup routine while still including the usual robust range of effects, it’s got a nice time delay on the final loads, and he even managed to squeeze a penetration sequence out of those non-standard cups. And even though it’s not quite as impromptu as the atmosphere about it suggests, somehow I have a feeling he could find a way to set up right in front of everybody while making a mess of the table, and nobody would be any wiser for it.
If there is one criticism I’d give, it’s that he seemed to step all over the climaxes, both in the way he rushed through the final loads, and the explanation for how it was possible, which, although untrue, does have a semblance of deflating plausibility to it. Still, I suspect that’s one of his hallmarks — if he wasn’t muting just how good a magician he really is, he wouldn’t be the weirdo so many of us admire.
