Cups And Balls Week 1 Round-up

As I mentioned before, I’m opening up the blog this month to include submissions from people so long as they’re cups and balls related somehow. Here’s stuff that’s been sent in so far…

Bri, known as “mindyourmagic” on the Magic Cafe, runs a website called cupsandballsmagic.com, and it’s got articles, news, videos and reviews related to the genre. He’s got an interesting article in there on prop management that you might want to check out if you’re trying to design your own routine, and he also put up this review of Kent Gunn’s Fun Shop Cups and Balls. It’s a nice gateway to the genre.

Lawrens Godon sent in this video of himself doing a two cup routine which has several interesting aspects going on in it which you might want to check out. He took me in on a couple of things in there. There is a video edit at one point which he apologizes for, but it’s not a horrendous one in terms of what it leaves out.

Kent Gunn had this to say on a Magic Cafe thread…

Andrew, I can’t believe you haven’t added this performance to the month of February.

It has all you could ask in a great Cups and Balls presentation and a performer who has wrapped the aged effect in a truly magical tale.

Alright Kent, here you go. For anybody who’s aware of Al Schneider, you might be able to sense his influence in Suzanne’s Parable.

Further PMing with Kent led to two more performances by female magicians of the cups and balls.

This one is from Lisa Cousins…

…while this is from Kate Medvedeva, which has some interesting loads.

Finally, after the recent gaff regarding the pedigree of the Rub A Dub Dub cups and balls poem, I had an exchange with Lance Pierce in which he shared the following, which he graciously allowed me to republish here…

Here’s all I know about it:

Yes, Jack Bateman was the originator of the routine. I don’t know if he used plastic cups and pom poms like the Royal Magic set or if he used regular cups and balls, but I do know he had a large load ending.

Later, Gene Gordon acquired the rights to it. In Gene’s hands, it was the perfect pitch item to sell over the magic counter. Somewhere along the way, the large loads were dropped. The poem ends with stacking everything together and putting the cups away, but it also ends completely reset. Another feature is that there was no sleight of hand throughout the entire thing; it was just stacking and unstacking cups and finding the balls jumped around. I can’t imagine many better pitch routines.

I suspect, but have no way of knowing, that Gene’s marketed version of the handling may be somewhat different from Jack Bateman’s. Using large loads would have required sleight of hand, so since Bateman obviously wasn’t averse to that, he may have used it throughout the routine as well. It’s possible, but not certain, that what Gene Gordon bought was the presentation. The routine uses five pom pom balls; I don’t know if Bateman used five or not.

Anyway, I became familiar with the routine through seeing Michael Skinner do it. I never worked on it, though, until I was working full time in the bar, and I thought that would be a good routine to do early in the evening for the families (which it was). All the bar routines, though, had to have a good climax, so I put a large load sequence onto it (not knowing about Bateman’s handling) and extended the poem to fit.

Bill saw me do the routine and really liked it, particularly when he saw how the people responded to it. He later asked if he could put it on the DVDs and, with permission from Phil Willmarth as well (who had bought the rights from Gene Gordon), he was set. It’s worth noting that Bill uses the flash production to produce the golf balls at the end. I always produced the balls in sequence, much like Skinner did on the tonight show.

So there you have it!

Thanks again goes out to Lance for that. Starting tomorrow, week 2…
