Just another offbeat routine as we meander all over the place on the road to Vernon. I’m not quite sure just how gaffed Frye’s particular offering is, but I’m guessing a lot. That’s not to take away from the technical nature of the routine — I actually quite like much of his sleight of hand — but something tells me this particular routine was developed so as to withstand the sort of repeated scrutiny that I think might bring down more conventional sleight-based strategies. Arturo Ascanio once lamented the fact that some magic was classified as being “magic for magicians”, and he asked why magicians couldn’t have their own magic. I’m not saying that this sort of routine is purely for magicians, but I’m certain it would fool a large number of them, especially as mass exposure on Youtube and Fox specials is narrowing the gap between the average person and the average magician, and the more people you work for, the more you’re going to have to worry about somebody yelling that the ball’s in the other hand. Something tells me this won’t be much of a problem for Frye, or those who do this routine. And, arguably, if you’re going to supply your own cups anyway, why not really go for it?
